Although the wheel itself is arguably the most significant upgrade you can make to your bicycle, changing the tires is the quickest upgrade and also the most cost effective dollar for dollar. There are many options available and these are the major considerations when selecting new tires for road or mountain use:
- How smooth a ride do you want?
- How much traction do you want? Do you ride in wet conditions frequently?
- How much flat resistance?
- How aggressive do you take corners?
- How long do you want the tire to last?
Continental has a very strong lineup for both on and off road riding, and manufacturers its high end tires in Germany. A lot of the technology that is found in their automobile tires is quickly shifted into their bicycle lines, and we believe that their bicycle tires are the most technically advanced available today. We are one of the largest Continental bicycle tire dealers in the Pacific Northwest, and we always have a very wide selection on hand.
Kenda is one of the few American companies that manufacture bicycle tires. Their strength is in mountain bike tires, and their Nevegal is a Pacific Northwest all-mountain favorite.
Definitely one of the most creative companies in the bicycle tire field, Maxxis is the name behind such memorable mountain bike tires as the Minion, High Roller, and Ardent. It’s very common for us to recommend a mix of Maxxis tires for a bike depending upon the style of riding, and the trails that you’ll be riding on them.
The latest version of Michelin’s top of the line bicycle tire has seen many improvements, and the Pro4 has become many of our customers’ new favorite. The Pro4 now comes in Service Course (ultimate performance) and Endurance (durability) versions.
Although this German brand lives in the shadow of the Continental colossus, Schwalbe has carved out a very nice niche in the bicycle world by focusing on premium high performance tires.
The Italian classic road racing tire, Vittoria is the best choice when you want a plush ride without sacrificing performance. The Open Corsa EVO CX has been one of our top sellers for many years, and we also love the more durable Pave and budget-oriented Diamante.
